About

However you have come across our organisation - whether that is instagram, word of mouth or through good old-fashioned google, you may have wondered what exactly we do as a charity. Have a quick read below to find out more!

Where did all this begin?

African Caribbean Medical Mentors (ACMM) began as a mentoring scheme which provides 1-to-1 mentorship between black applicants to medical school and current medical students and doctors. Our co-founders spent hours a week trying to optimise the mentoring programme for students and get the word out about ACMM, before they felt like they were able to expand to different ventures. We wanted our students to feel championed and confident, and allow our mentors to give back to their community in a practical way.

Where are we now?

We started to expand our ventures firstly by running our 'how to get into medicine day' for black students applying to medicine school. Since then, we have provided a number of workshops to teach students, and have also provided insight and knowledge via our outreach programmes. Most of our initiatives have been run by trial and error - we create what we would have wanted as students, run the project and improve them year on year based on YOUR feedback. In addition to our events, we have created e-books for students and parents to access. We have over 700 individuals in our network, and have been recognised by the BBC, BMA and Lambeth Council. We have also worked on many informal projects, as long as they fit in with our goal to help future and current black doctors and dentists, we are happy and proud of the work we do.

As a celebration of our four years of work in 2021, we curated this impact report showcasing our highlights as a charitable organisation.
