Medical school: how to proceed with your application

With so many changes in the last few weeks – from schools and colleges being closed, the extra strain on the NHS and the uncertainty of when Universities will be opening again – you are probably wondering what COVID-19 means for your upcoming application. Currently, there has been no new guidance for medical or dental applications so we are all still unsure how applications will be managed this year and whether there will be any changes.
However, a good thing to note is that all other applicants are in the same boat as you. Universities know the huge impact that COVID-19 is having on the current year and will most likely take this into consideration when reviewing applications to both Medicine and Dentistry.

So what can you do practically?
1.Volunteer
If you have the capacity, it is a good time to see if you can gain any volunteering opportunities that will aid your community during this uncertain time. There are various opportunities available such as befriending a lonely person via phone or delivering shopping to someone who is unable to get out and about. Search for local opportunities within your borough or within the NHS and see if there is anything that you feel comfortable doing. Not only will this give you a chance to fill your spare time, it is also a chance to gain an understanding of what it would mean to be a key worker during this time!
2.Speak to a healthcare professional
If you are currently not feeling you have the capacity to volunteer – try not to worry. Use your social media to try and reach out to current doctors/dentists or medical/dental students you may know. Ask them if you can have a short conversation about their experiences and try and ask them any questions that are important in understanding life as a healthcare professional as well as why you want to study Medicine or Dentistry. This will give you a chance to gain more understanding of the profession even though you are unable to complete the needed work experience. UCAS are providing opportunity to speak to students on the courses you are planning to apply to and ACMM are always here to help – get in touch with us if you are struggling to find any healthcare professionals to talk to.
3. Keep up to date with the news
It’s important during this time to make sure you are not obsessing over COVID-19 as this can be very detrimental to your mental health. However, try to keep updated with what is happening – specifically learning more about pandemics, viruses and how the healthcare system in the UK is managing. Medical school interviews do test your interest and understanding of current healthcare issues and having a good grasp of knowledge currently will be helpful for your interview in the future as COVID-19 and pandemics could come up!
4. Try and keep a routine
Although you may not be at school or college anymore – it is important to try and keep a routine. Firstly, it will make it easier for you to go back to normal once sixth form and college resume and secondly, it will allow you to feel like your day to day has more purpose. Try to set yourself some goals each day and each week such as reading a new book, exercising or learning something new. During this time, it is normal to have down days but trying to fill your time with some productive activity will help the time go by! There are still opportunities to do some of the things you had planned before – universities are providing “Virtual open days” in order for you to get a chance to see the Universities you are applying to and there are many YouTubers out there providing information on the application process as well as their time as students and qualified professionals! Try to fit at least one productive thing into each day!
